The Rise of The #HashTag Monster!

Location: Nassau, The Bahamas

...Or should I say; #THERISEOFTHEHASHTAGMONSTER!
Borrowed From Vulcan Post.
#
They were first introduced by Twitter (the micro blog site) to encourage users to seek out like minded tweeters to follow.  Like many popular features of social networking, the #hashtag transcended beyond twitter into other social networks such as Face book and Google+ and made its mark as a staple among social network tools.  Dare I say, unfortunately so!
 #
In case you were unaware; when you #hashtag a word or phrase on any social media site that uses them, it becomes a link.  When you click on the link, you are directedto the most resent uses of that #hashtag.  The idea behind it is to encourage social behavior on social networks.  By searching a #hashtag, you are able to find other people with similar interest.

Contrary to what appears to be popular belief, #hashtags are NOT the cool new way to write EVERYTHING!
 #
Again the idea behind a #hashtag link is for people to connect.  But the more popular they become, the more out of control they get.  Seemingly, the rather simple concept escapes many (if not most) #hashtag users.
 #
So, in keeping with my retentive nature; here are some guidelines for using #hashtags that can help keep the social in social networking:
 #
1.                  Do not #hashtag people to put them on blast!  Bullying people is just plain immature, #hashtag or not!
2.                  Do not #hashtag an entire sentence.  Use a #hashtag for key words and/or common short phrases that people will recognize.
3.                  Do not #hashtag random words.  Hash tagging the word the, or is, or some, or man, etc., will most likely lead you to incoherent and unrelated posts.  That just defeats the purpose.
4.                  Use a #hashtag for catch phrases if you use them; providing, of course, your catch phase is not an entire sentence long!  For example; if your catch phrase is something like, “I wake up every morning and give thanks.”  You may want to just use #givethanks as a #hashtag.  Using shorter catch phrases encourages people to join in the fun.
5.                  Use a #hashtag to connect with others in your profession, or people who share the same hobbies or conviction.  #blogger, #football, #fishing, #itguy, #chirstian, #reader, #writer, #socialmedia, #ethics, #fashion, #CEO, #music
6.                  If you have a brand, you can use #hashtags to promote your brand and make it popular.  For example, to gain exposure for my blog, I may use the #hashtag #missopinonated or #lettinggoofgone with a commonly used #hashtag such as #tgfl, #tgif, #tbt, #RT (my current favorite), #followme, etc. in the same post.  However;
7.                  Please try to avoid using a million different #hashtags on the same post!  Chances are your objective will become lost in translation—mostly on account of the fact that most people go cross-eyed when they spot a page full of #hashtags. [Erroneous?...I know! ;)]
8.                  Please, please, please, please make sure that the words in your #hashtag are spelt correctly!

All-in-all, the idea behind using a #hashtag on social networks is to encourage social behavior…but I may just be the only one who thinks so!  There’s a very real possibility that Chris Messina inventented the #hashtag with the sole intention of driving OCD people all the way crazy!
